tessuti 2014 jaywalk competition - my entry

wow may is a busy month at our place - my eldest son (elvis) has his birthday and thanks to having a great bunch of friends from mum's group when our first bubs were born may is one long party month.  added to that a few kids from elvis' day care also have may birthdays, meaning at least one weekend day and sometimes both are taken up with parties.  i did get a chance to do a bit of sewing during may but not as much as normal.

one of the main things i worked on was my entry for the tessuti 2014 jaywalk competition. here's my entry, a close fitting dress with three quarter sleeves.  i used simplicity 2054, similar to the one i made in my recent post.

i made the front by cutting the black/neutral jaywalk into strips of various widths and sewing them back together.  i also used some black ponte for the sleeves and one horizontal stripe.  for the back i made a yoke and used the contrasting white/neutral jaywalk. similar to last time i made this dress i added back darts.

i sewed the strips together on my regular sewing machine using a small zig zag stitch.

i also used my regular sewing machine for all of the dress construction.  the one place i ran into a bit of trouble which i hadn't considered was at the neckline due to the bulk of fabric i created.  i used a walking foot here and it went together ok.

i am pretty happy how this turned out.  its great to challenge yourself and try something new.  i'm enjoying checking out all the other great entries - good luck everyone!

hopefully i'll be back soon to blog a few of the other things i made in may.

    1. Thanks! It actually wasn't too tricky, just a bit time consuming. I still keep thinking about the sleeves on your dress, I always find it tricky matching stripes on sleeves, your look amazing!

    1. Thanks, its funny half way through I wasn't sure that it would work out to be something I would actually wear - but now am really happy with how it turned out. We both went for black sleeves too! I really like how the black block of colour looks with the stripes. Also love your zip and how flat you got it in, i imagine if i tried something like that it would be very wavy!

    1. Thanks, it look a few nights to do, but pretty simple really - just cutting the strips, pinning them and then sewing. I must admit I did put the few wider ones in to make sure it didn't take too long!! I actually bought the camber pattern for the dress as have been loving yours but in the end decided to go with a TNT for the competition. Can't wait to give the camber a go!

  7. Wow! It hurts my brain to even think about all the stripe matching in this dress... and you did it in strech, none the less. Absolutely fabulous outcome, Emma!

    1. Thanks! Apart from being quite repetitive it wasn't actually too hard to match the strips, but am very happy with how it all came together.

  19. Congratulations on your win - your dress is truly stunning. The way you've used the stripes is incredibly clever adn so effective. Can't wait to see what you do with your prize.

Sorry for the delay in responding to your comment - to answer your questions (which you may no longer care about!), the contrast panels on the Ursula skirt are just rectangles with a tiny bit of shaping at the top and unfortunately I can't find the fabric online anymore but I'm sure if you emailed Tessuti they'd be happy to help.
